What Are The Three Types Of Valves?

There are many types of valves. These three core types are check valve, control valves valve and check valve when considering the basic function, structural characteristics and application field of check valve. Here are the details:
I. Shut-off (Intercept/Connect Media Flow)
Function: Used to completely cut off or connect the medium flow in the pipeline, is the most basic valve type in industrial piping systems.
Common types:
Gate Valve
Structure: Adopt straight valve body, open and close by lifting gate plate.
Features: Low fluid resistance, high opening and closing torque, suitable for large diameter, low pressure differential (e.g., water supply steam pipelines).
Limitations: Sealed cover wear easily and are not suitable for media containing particles.
Cutoff valve
Structure: The disc moves along the centerline of the valve seat to change the cross-sectional area of the flow passage.
Features: Good sealing performance, high regulation precision, but high fluid resistance, suitable for high pressure, small diameter pipeline (e.g., chemical and petroleum pipelines).
Ball Valve
Structure: The ball rotates open and close around the valve stem and is divided into floating ball and pressure ball.
Features: Fast opening and closing speed, reliable sealing, suitable for high and mediumpressure, frequent operation (e.g., natural gas and refrigeration systems).
Butterfly Valve
Structure: The disk rotates around axis to control flow.
Features: Simple structure, small size, suitable for large diameter, low pressure differential (e.g. ventilation, water treatment).
Application Scenarios: opening and closing control of pipeline systems, such as cutting off or connecting water, steam, gas, etc.
ii. Control Valves (Controlling Medium Flow/Pressure)
Function: By changing the opening of the disc, these valves can precisely regulate the flow, pressure or temperature of the medium.
Common types:
Globe Control Valve
Structure: Improved cut-off valve to regulate flow through the disc.
Features: High adjustment accuracy, but high fluid resistance, suitable for small diameter and high pressure (e.g., laboratory equipment).
Throttle Valve
Structure: By changing the cross section volume of the flow channel, the disc is usually conical or needle-shaped.
Features: Simple structure, limited range of regulation, suitable for low pressure, small flow rate (e.g., gas stoves).
Pressure relief valve
Structure: Induces pressure through springs or diaphragm and automatically adjusts the opening of the disc to maintain stable outlet pressure.
Features: Automatic adjustment, constant outlet pressure, suitable for reducing pressure of high-pressure gases (e.g., steam systems and pneumatic equipment).
Application Scenarios: Scenes that require precise control of media parameters, such as chemical production, HVAC and water treatment.
III. Check Valves (to prevent Medium Backflow)
Function: These valves allow only one-way flow of media, automatically prevent reverse flow, protect equipment from damage and prevent media contamination.
Common types:
Lift Check Valve
Structure: The disc moves vertically along the valve seat, resets依靠 the welded deformation of the disc according to gravity or medium pressure.
Features: Good sealing performance, but high fluid resistance, suitable for small caliber, horizontal pipe (such as pump outlet).
Swinging Check Valve
Structure: Disc rotates around valve seat shaft, opening and closing with low fluid resistance.
Features: Fast opening and closing speed, suitable for large caliber, vertical or horizontal pipes (such as water supply and drainage systems).
Butterfly Check
Structure: Combine butterfly valve structure to rotate disc around shaft.
Features: Compact structure, light weight, suitable for low pressure, large diameter (e.g., ventilation pipelines).
Application Scenarios: Scenes that require protection against medium backflow, such as pump outlets, boiler feedwater and sewage treatment.
