Socket weld flanges have a groove on the back of the flange to receive the end of the pipe, which is connected by a fillet weld around the flange. Because socket weld connections are not as strong as butt weld connections, the use of this type of flange is almost always limited to NPS 4 (dn100) and smaller through diameters, as well as lower pressure ratings. The features that distinguish socket weld flanges from other flanges are the recessed areas of the pipe, the fillet welds, and the gap between the pipe and the flange.
