After determining the sanitary structure and sealing material of the sanitary valve body body, the driving method is the core of selection. Similarly, The same 316L sanitary butterfly valve, equipped with manual handle, pneumatic actuator or electric actuator, has significant differences in applicable working conditions, control logic, investment cost, etc. Many dairy and drug lines plan their pipeline without knowing the difference between the three drivers, either by increasing budgets blindly through automation or by using manual valves to affect the continuity of production across the line. According to the actual demand of cleaner production, this paper analyzes the characteristics, advantages and application scenarios of three driving forms, and helps us to clarify our own selection ideas.
1, Manual sanitary butterfly valve: a low-cost base switch solution.
Manual butterfly valve relies on the handle or handwheel to drive the stem directly to rotate, complete with full opening and closure through a 90 rotation. The simplest structure requires no matching gas source or power supply. It costs the least, is easy to install, has a lower maintenance workload and a lower probability of failure. Operators can visualize the position of the handle and quickly determine the valve's on-off status.
The drawbacks are also obvious, requiring on-site operators, not being able to control remotely, and not being suitable for pipelines that are frequently opened and closed. In cleaning workshops, manual butterfly valves are usually used in low-frequency locations, such as bypass pipelines, sewage outlets and sampling valves at the bottom of storage tanks. They are rarely turned on or off during routine production and only run during batch changes, CIP cleaning or maintenance. If the large caliber sanitary butterfly valve is operated by the operator, the opening and closing torque is too large, it is more troublesome to operate. In general, small aperture and low-frequency working conditions are better suited to manual modes. If the production line is highly automated and there are more valve points, the use of a large number of manual valves increases the risk of manual error.
2, Pneumatic sanitary butterfly valve: the mainstream choice of cleaning line automation.
Pneumatic butterfly valve relies on compressed air to drive the internal piston of the actuator, drive valve stem to rotate, realize opening and closing. It is also the most commonly used self-driving form of food and drug cleaning pipe. Pneumatic actuators can be divided into single action spring reset and double action. In the single-action mode, when the gas is cut off, the spring will automatically reset the valve to a preset state, achieve fault safety protection, meet the safety requirements of aseptic processes, and prevent the gas from being cut off and the pipeline from getting out of control.
Pneumatic butterfly valves opens and closes quickly, is suitable for high frequency cycle switches, is suitable for CIP cleaning, ingredient conveying, batch switching, etc. Compressed air itself does not produce electrical sparks, making it safer in explosion-proof cleaning workshops where alcohol and solvents evaporate. Its limitation lies the need for a stable compressed air pipeline. If the air source contains water or oil, without thorough filtration, it can slowly invade the actuator, causing blockages. Therefore, the air source of the clean room needs to be equipped with a dry filter device. At the same time, pneumatic valves usually has only two position control: full opening and full closing, it is difficult to achieve continuous flow regulation.
3, Electric sanitary butterfly valve: suitable for remote precision regulation solutions.
Electric butterfly valves use motor as power source, plus reduction mechanisms to drive valve. By connecting control signals, they can be connected to PLC and host computer systems for remote control. Unlike pneumatic valves, electric actuators can stop precisely in the middle to achieve continuous flow regulation. They are not just simple on/off valves, but can also be used as regulator valves.
Electric valves do not require compressed air or matching gas sources. It has advantages of independent equipment, small size, no air compression stations, and is not convenient for laying air pipes. However, its opening and closing speed is much slower than pneumatic, high frequency repeated opening and closing can easily cause the motor to overheat. In wet and steamy cleaning workshops, high-protection actuators must be selected to avoid circuit failures caused by water vapor infiltration. Its procurement price is higher than pneumatic purchase price, and the threshold of later electrical maintenance is higher. It is suitable for the process which needs flow closed-loop control, formula feed and remote centralized control.
4, Core dimension comparison: match drive type according to process requirements.
In determining the driving mode, three conditions should be given priority: switching frequency, whether to set up a safety fault location, and workshop conditions. If the valve is only in operation for a few days, bypass and sewage pipelines should be operated manually first to save costs; Continuous production, frequent switching, explosion resistance requirements, gas cutoff protection, with aerodynamics preferred; and if precise flow control is required, remote centralized monitoring without a compressed air source, electric.
Many production lines are not a single solution, but a combination of solutions: pneumatic butterfly valves are widely used in the main process of transmission pipelines, manual valves are used for bypass and sampling ports, and electric butterfly valves are installed in several locations where flow needs to be regulated. This balanced budget, level of automation and safe production is a relatively mature portfolio of clean pipes.
5. Clean working conditions selection, avoidance and maintenance points.
When choosing, consider not only the form of driving, but also the environmental requirements of the sanitation workshop. Pneumatic actuator and electric actuator housing should be easy to wipe, not dust accumulation, in line with workshop cleaning standards; the connection between actuator and valve body should be as simple as possible to reduce dirt accumulation in the gap. Pneumatic valves should be regularly inspected for gas source treatment device, timely drain and remove oil; Electric valve door should be waterproof and dust-proof to prevent water from entering during steam cleaning; and the tightness of the manual handle should be checked regularly to prevent it from loosening after repeated turns.
In addition, the aseptic process focuses on fail-safe mode to ensure that the valve automatically returns to a safe state in the event of a power interruption to avoid liquid leakage and material misflow. Many procurement companies tend to ignore this, focusing on normal production conditions rather than emergency situations such as electricity and gas outages.
In short, there is no absolute superiority or inferiority of these three drivers, only their applicability. The advantages of manual labor are simplicity and cost saving. The advantages of electric labor excels are speed, safety, and adaptability to high frequency automation. By understanding the characteristics of these three, combined with the automation level production line, gas source condition and process safety requirements, the proper sanitary butterfly valves drive scheme can be selected comprehensively to meet the requirements of GMP cleaner production, as well as reasonable control of project investment and late-stage maintenance costs.
